Helen Nugent is a freelance journalist, broadcaster, and consultant based in Manchester.
With 19 years under her belt working across all areas of journalism, including print, digital, and broadcast, her wealth of expertise includes 14 years in London, ten of which were spent at The Times in a variety of roles including News Editor, House of Commons Correspondent, and finance specialist. Helen’s work has appeared in pretty much every national newspaper, from The Daily Telegraph and The Mail on Sunday to the Financial Times, The Guardian and The Observer. You can also find her articles in The Big Issue and the Yorkshire Post. Most recently, she was the Money Editor of The Spectator.
Helen is also a freelance radio and TV presenter. Her broadcast work and appearances number BBC 5 live, Sky News, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Radio Merseyside, and BBC Radio Lancashire.
Four years ago, Helen founded the Northern Soul website, an arts and enterprise webzine based in the North of England. Northern Soul shines a spotlight on all things Northern, from theatre and music to heritage and business. Today the team consists of more than 60 professional journalists and specialists whose combined CV includes the BBC, national and regional newspapers, and global websites.
Helen is well used to chairing conferences, panel events and online debates. Past engagements include chairing events for CityCo in Manchester, the arts centre HOME, and other arts and corporate programmes such as the Manchester Literature Festival, the Northern Soul Awards, and the National Day Nurseries Association. She is a practiced public speaker.
With a background interviewing leading figures, politicians and chief executives, and a successful track record as an investigative journalist, Helen is available to conduct interviews. Aside from her journalism, Helen runs her own media training company (training individuals and groups) and media consultancy. Services include content provision and PR work. She also runs blogging workshops, has lectured at both City and Westminster universities, and mentors undergraduates at Newcastle University.
During her career, Helen has won many awards. Most recently she was shortlisted for Person of Purpose at the Northern Power Women awards.
